Mother of two Shashika Kumarage had a clear vision to build on her background and take her career to the next level with a Master of Environmental Planning from the University of Waikato.

Moving to New Zealand from Sri Lanka with her husband and two young children, she balanced the year-long degree alongside family life in a completely new country.

Despite the challenges, her determination never wavered. She was supported closely by her husband, who she says, “was very helpful throughout that period”.

After completing her Bachelor of Town and Country Planning in Sri Lanka in 2014, Shashika worked in both government and private organisations before researching the best university for her master’s.

“When I searched university courses, the Master of Environmental Planning was very well related to my planning background and bachelor’s degree. Waikato was the ideal programme because it is just one year long, so it aligned best.”

Shashika enjoyed being part of the class and made an effort to attend both lectures and workshops on campus.

I enjoyed the practical planning experience with the lecturers and guest lecturers, which allowed us to work as a team and present our ideas and proposals.

“I also took ENVPL512 Advanced Contemporary Māori, Pacific and Indigenous Environmental Planning, which allowed me to learn how Māori engage with the environment and understand the historical context. I gained important practical lessons throughout my master’s.”

Her commitments extended beyond study and family. She volunteered for the Red Cross, Hamilton SPCA, and Hamilton City Council’s native tree planting initiatives.

Shashika is currently working in strategy and policy in local government.

“It is very aligned with my qualifications and experience. It is a good opportunity to gain knowledge and practical experience in New Zealand planning.”

Now settled in New Zealand with her family, Shashika plans to stay long term and encourages others to take a similar step.

“It has been an important and valuable journey so far, coming from Sri Lanka, being a mum, and moving my family here to a new culture, people, and language. I am looking forward to continuing to gain experience and extend my knowledge in planning.”
