Wikus Van Pareen
Waikatoâs strong academic reputation gave Wikus Van Pareen confidence that the qualification heâd earn would be valuable and recognised. That decision set him on a path toward a career in computer science.
Tauranga
For Wikus van Pareen, choosing the University of Waikato came down to three things: location, reputation and alignment with his passion for technology.
âThe Tauranga campus made it easy to stay local while completing my course,â he says. âAnd Waikatoâs strong academic reputation gave me confidence that what Iâd learn would be valuable and recognised.â That decision set him on a path toward a career in computer science.
âIâve always been curious about how computers work and how to build things with them. Studying Computer Science felt like the right way to turn that interest into something professional.â Wikus graduated with a degree in Computer Science and now works at Tauranga City Council. He started in 2022 and has since been promoted to his current role.
âItâs a stepping stone,â he says. âMy goal is to eventually work exclusively in software design and development.â His time at Waikato prepared him well.
âThe programme went deep into areas like software writing and algorithm design â exactly the kind of skills I want to use more professionally. It was practical, engaging, and genuinely enjoyable.â
He also appreciated the atmosphere at the Tauranga campus. âItâs intimate and easy to connect with people. Everythingâs in one building, so it never feels overwhelming. Youâre focused, but still part of a community.â
As the first of his siblings to attend university, Wikus credits his father for encouraging him to pursue higher education. âHe always said that having a qualification shows employers you can start something and finish it. Itâs proof of commitment, adaptability, and growth.â
His advice to future students? âGo for it. Waikato is a great place to start. Youâll be supported, youâll grow, and youâll make connections that matter. Time management is key, but so is balance. Uni taught me how to prioritise study while still making space for social life and personal development.â
With a clear goal and a growing skillset, Wikus is well on his way to making his mark in the tech world, one line of code at a time.
