Applied Linguistics Subject regulations
Applied Linguistics is an interdisciplinary field of research and instruction which integrates ideas from linguistics, psychology, sociology, anthropology, education, and languages into a distinct field focused on practical issues such as the learning and teaching of second languages.

Prescriptions for:

PGCert(AppLing), PGDip(AppLing) and MA(Applied) The MA(Applied) is offered on-campus in Hamilton and may be taken full or part-time. The programme comprises taught papers or equivalents amounting to 120 points. In addition to the core paper APPLN501, students are required to take 90 further points from papers listed for the MA(Applied). With the approval of the Programme Convenor of Applied Linguistics, students may take APPLN591, APPLN592 or APPLN593 in lieu of taught papers. The requirements for admission to masters level study in Applied Linguistics are set out in the qualification regulations.

PGCert(TESOL) and PGDip(TESOL) The Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages is available on-campus in Hamilton. The programme comprises 60 points, consisting of APPLN564 and APPLN566 as required papers.
The Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages is available on-campus in Hamilton and may be taken full-time or part-time. The programme comprises 120 points, including APPLN564 and APPLN566 as required papers.

MTESOL The qualification regulations define the requirements for the Master of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.
Candidates admitted into the 180 point MTESOL under section 2(a) or 2(b), must complete 180 points at 500 level, including: APPLN501, APPLN564, APPLN566, and either ALPSS592 (60 points) or APPLN585 and one of APPLN505, APPLN530, APPLN562, APPLN563, or APPLN565.
Candidates admitted into the 120 point MTESOL under section 2(c), must complete 120 points at 500 level, including: APPLN501, APPLN564, APPLN566 and APPLN585.
Candidates who have completed a Bachelor’s degree with Honours or a Postgraduate Diploma in a cognate discipline may substitute APPLN564 and APPLN566 for one of APPLN505, APPLN530, APPLN562, APPLN563, APPLN565, or APPLN592 and any remaining points from any elective paper.

MPhil The Master of Philosophy is a one year research-based degree in which students undertake a programme of approved and supervised research that leads to a thesis which critically investigates an approved topic of substance and significance, demonstrates expertise in the methods of research and scholarship, displays intellectual independence and makes a substantial original contribution to the subject area concerned, and is of publishable quality.

PhD The Doctor of Philosophy is a three year research-based degree in which students undertake a programme of approved and supervised research that leads to a thesis which critically investigates an approved topic of substance and significance, demonstrates expertise in the methods of research and scholarship, displays intellectual independence and makes a substantial original contribution to the subject area concerned, and is of publishable quality.
