English as a Second Language Subject regulations

These papers are for students whose first language is not English, and are designed to enhance the academic language skills required for university study. Students who would like to develop their knowledge and confidence in the skills of speaking, writing, reading, and listening in English are encouraged to choose an ENSLA paper as one of their elective papers. All papers are available in Hamilton and online in Moodle.

English as a Second Language is available as a minor.

To complete a minor in English as a Second Language, students must complete 60 points, including at least 30 points above 100 level.

Note:

There will be no new enrolments into the English as a Second Language minor in 2026 onwards. Students enrolled in 2025 or previously should consult Te Puna Ako – Centre for Tertiary Teaching and Learning for programme advice.
