University testing lockdown systems

20 Apr 2023

The University of Waikato is conducting a technical test of lockdown systems on its Hamilton campus today.

The test is taking place at 11am and will last just three minutes.

An emergency siren will sound on the Hamilton campus, and access-controlled doors will automatically lock.

Staff and students will not be able to use swipe cards on locked doors during this time, however door release buttons will still work for people to be able to exit.

Members of the public should not be alarmed if they hear the siren - this exercise is being run to test the University’s technical response to a lockdown situation.

Following the test, the University will seek feedback from staff, students and the wider Hamilton campus community on how far afield the siren can be heard.
