Construction managers
- usually work irregular and long hours, including weekends
- usually work on building and demolition sites and may travel locally or nationally
- may work outdoors and in dusty, dirty and noisy conditions
- need to lead others, make decisions and be safety conscious

- manage construction sites
- plan and check health and safety rules
- assess materials and machinery needed
- arrange budgets and manage costs
- consult with clients and building professionals
- hire and supervise workers and subcontractors
- plan building schedules and organise supplies
- make sure traffic and environmental rules are followed
- review plans and instructions for work
- communicate progress with clients and stakeholders
How can you become a Construction manager?
You need experience to become a construction manager and a qualification may be useful.
You need
- experience in similar work
- a driver licence
You may need
- a relevant tertiary qualification in architecture, civil engineering, building and construction or similar area
- a New Zealand Certificate in Construction Trades Supervision (Level 5)
- to be a licensed building practitioner
If you're in school
You usually need NCEA Level 3 to do the study or training for this job.
