Counsellors
- usually work regular business hours but may work shifts
- usually work in community centres, schools and private practices
- may do emotionally demanding work
- need to be responsible, communicate well and identify and solve problems
Tasks
- counsel clients online, in person or by phone
- help clients talk about emotions and experiences
- teach clients ways to cope
- discuss life challenges with clients
- research solutions for clients problems
- write notes on clients
- maintain client records
- encourage clients to talk about past experiences
How can you become a Counsellor?
You need a qualification to become a counsellor.
You need
- a bachelor's degree in counselling
- to pass a police check
You may need
- a postgraduate certificate or diploma in counselling or Māori health hauora
- to be a registered member of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors
- an Annual Practising Certificate
If you're in school
You need University Entrance to do the study or training for this job.
