Mechatronics engineers

  • usually work regular business hours, but may work evenings and weekends
  • usually work in offices, workshops and factories, and may travel locally and nationally
  • need to be logical, methodical and practical

  • design machinery, smart devices and robotic equipment
  • design control systems for machines
  • build prototypes of machines and systems
  • test how machines and systems perform
  • make improvements to machines and systems
  • calculate running costs of systems
  • keep records on system performance

How can you become a Mechatronics engineer?

You need a qualification and experience to become a mechatronics engineer.

You need

  • a bachelor's degree in mechanical and industrial engineering and technology, computer science, manufacturing, engineering and technology or similar area
  • experience in a similar area related to the type of mechatronics engineering

You may need

  • an Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB) licence
  • to join a professional organisation

Study Mechatronics Engineering in our Bachelor of Engineering with Honours, combining mechanical, electrical and software engineering in one degree. You'll design and build smart systems, from robots to automated equipment, and showcase your projects at the Waikato Engineering Design Show. You'll also complete 800 hours of work experience, usually paid, before you graduate.

The degree is accredited by Engineering New Zealand under the Washington Accord, so it's recognised internationally. After your degree, you can specialise further with our Master of Engineering.
