Patent attorneys
- usually work regular business hours but may work extra hours
- usually work in offices and courts and may travel locally or nationally to visit clients

- prepare and file patent applications
- manage patent approval process
- track patents and renewals
- enforce patent rights against misuse
- protect patents from misuse
- negotiate patent usage deals
- keep up to date with New Zealand patent law
How can you become a Patent attorney?
You need a qualification and experience to become an patent attorney.
You need
- a Bachelor of Laws
- to pass the Professional Legal Studies course
- a certificate of completion from the New Zealand Council of Legal Education
- a certificate of character from the New Zealand Law Society
- to be admitted to the Roll of Barristers and Solicitors of the High Court of New Zealand
- a practising certificate from the New Zealand Law Society
- 2 years’ work experience in intellectual property law
- a Level 5 technical qualification in science or technology with patentable subject matter
- a statement of skill by a registered patent attorney
