What would you do as a Ranger?
Rangers
- usually work regular business hours but may work weekends and evenings
- usually work outdoors in areas like regional parks and may travel locally and nationally
- may work in all weather conditions
- may do physically demanding work
- need to be responsible, make decisions and identify and solve problems
Tasks
- protect native habitats, wildlife and plants
- control pests and weeds and run nurseries
- protect marine areas and enforce rules
- protect and restore historic sites
- build relationships with communities and iwi
- develop and manage volunteer and education programmes
- help and provide information to park visitors
- build and maintain tracks, toilets and huts
- keep park facilities clean and remove rubbish
How can you become a Ranger?
You usually need experience and a qualification to become a ranger.
You need
- a driver licence
You may need
- a New Zealand Certificate in Conservation (Operations) (Level 4)
- a New Zealand Diploma in Environmental Management (Level 6)
- a bachelor's degree in sport and recreation, environmental sustainability, botany, ecology, business studies or similar area
- experience in similar work
- a First Aid Certificate
If you're in school
You usually need NCEA Level 3 or University Entrance to do the study or training for this job.
