Certificate in Business

This one-year certificate is available to students who wish to gain an introductory qualification in business. It can even be the start of something bigger, like a bachelor's degree.

BBus students

A Certificate in Business is similar to completing the first year of a bachelor's degree at university. It's a great way to gain an introductory qualification and can propel you towards future success.

A one-year Cert(Bus) can include papers from any of these business subjects:

To complete the Cert(Bus), students must pass eight papers at Level 100 or above, including at least six papers in subjects listed within the field of Business, plus two elective papers in any subject offered at the University of Waikato. Please refer to the Regulations below.

You can study full-time and complete the Cert(Bus) in only two trimesters, or part-time over three or more trimesters.

Recommended papers

To gain a strong grounding in Business, we recommend that you include at least some of the following 'Business Fundamentals' papers in your course:

(Note: If you decide to continue your studies, these papers are also required for the Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of Management Studies with Honours.)

We currently offer papers in the four major subjects of Accounting, Finance, Marketing and Strategic Management, plus a variety of other papers in Economics, Leadership Communication, Digital Business and Supply Chain Management, and Management.

To complete the Cert(Bus), students must pass eight papers (120 points) at undergraduate level (Level 100 or above), including at least six papers (90 points) from subjects listed within the field of Business, plus two elective papers (30 points) in any subject.

All students must pass the compulsory Business Fundamentals paper STMGT101 Introduction to Management.

We recommend that students include some of the following 'Business Fundamentals' papers in their programme of study, although this is not compulsory:

Launch into further study

A Certificate in Business makes a good year of study - but if you find yourself wanting more, you'll have the option of crediting all of your papers towards a three- or four-year bachelor's degree instead.
