Question Types

There are a range of question types you can choose in Moodle quizzes. Below are explanations of the most commonly used ones. If you would like to see the full range of question types available, see the Moodle website.

Multiple choice Questions: Questions can have single or multiple correct responses. The responses can include images, audio files or other media. Each answer can hold a different weighting. Find out more

True/False Questions: A simple form of multiple choice which allows only two answers, true or false. The question (but not the answers) can include images or audio files. Find out more

Short answer: Allows a response of one or a few words, which is compared against several model answers. The response can include images. If written, keep the required answer as short as possible to avoid missing a correct answer that is worded differently. For free-text answers, even if short, use the Essay type. Find out more

Essay: You can use this question type if students are required to write in-depth answers or quizzes are replacing tests or exams. Responses can either be uploaded in a file format or written directly in Moodle. The responses must be graded manually. Find out more

Numerical: These questions allow for numerical responses and operate similarly to short answer questions. However, numerical answers are allowed to have an accepted error. Find out more
