How can you become an Elected government representative?

You usually need experience to become an elected government representative and a qualification may be useful.

You need

  • to be at least 18 years old
  • to be enrolled on the parliamentary electoral roll
  • to be elected

You may need

  • a relevant tertiary qualification in political science and policy studies, law studies, human society or similar area
  • experience in similar work

If you're in school

You usually need NCEA Level 3 to do the study or training for this job.

Study a Political Science major in our Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Social Sciences, and add Public Policy as a minor to understand how government decisions are made. Our Bachelor of Communication and Bachelor of Laws are also strong options, building the public speaking, legal and public engagement skills you'll use in public life. Like all our undergraduate degrees, these include work-integrated learning.

To specialise further, you can continue with a Master of Arts or Master of Social Sciences in Political Science.
