What would you do as a Mediator?
Mediators
- usually work regular business hours but may work extra hours
- usually work in offices, and may travel locally and nationally
- may do emotionally demanding work
- need to be organised, responsible and communicate well
Tasks
- mediate personal and workplace conflicts
- make decisions in legal cases
- conduct hearings to investigate legal issues
- meet with people involved in legal disputes
- research legal materials to help decision making
- interview people to understand their problems
- maintain communication between two parties in dispute
- authorise payments to settle disputes
How can you become a Mediator?
You usually need experience to become a mediator and a qualification may be useful.
You may need
- experience in similar work
- a relevant tertiary qualification in law studies, psychology studies, human welfare or similar area
- a Graduate Diploma in Conflict Resolution or similar
- to complete a mediation training course
If you're in school
You usually need NCEA Level 3 to do the study or training for this job.
