What would you do as a Ranger?

Rangers

  • usually work regular business hours but may work weekends and evenings
  • usually work outdoors in areas like regional parks and may travel locally and nationally
  • may work in all weather conditions
  • may do physically demanding work
  • need to be responsible, make decisions and identify and solve problems

Tasks

  • protect native habitats, wildlife and plants
  • control pests and weeds and run nurseries
  • protect marine areas and enforce rules
  • protect and restore historic sites
  • build relationships with communities and iwi
  • develop and manage volunteer and education programmes
  • help and provide information to park visitors
  • build and maintain tracks, toilets and huts
  • keep park facilities clean and remove rubbish

How can you become a Ranger?

You usually need experience and a qualification to become a ranger.

You need

  • a driver licence

You may need

  • a New Zealand Certificate in Conservation (Operations) (Level 4)
  • a New Zealand Diploma in Environmental Management (Level 6)
  • a bachelor's degree in sport and recreation, environmental sustainability, botany, ecology, business studies or similar area
  • experience in similar work
  • a First Aid Certificate

You usually need NCEA Level 3 or University Entrance to do the study or training for this job.

Study an Ecology and Biodiversity major in our Bachelor of Science (Technology), where you'll build the field skills to protect native plants, animals and ecosystems. For coastal or marine conservation, you can choose Marine Science instead. Like all our undergraduate degrees, both include work-integrated learning.

To specialise further, you can continue with our Master of Science.
