Learn about our Research
The New Zealand Institute for Security and Crime Science (NZISCS)

The New Zealand Institute for Security and Crime Science (NZISCS) was established at the University of Waikato in 2017. Our research aims to reduce crime and increase security through multi-disciplinary, evidence-based research. The University is the primary research partner for the New Zealand Police. The NZISCS also leads the Master of Security and Crime Science graduate programme, which is the first programme of its kind in New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific region.
Cyber Security Researchers of Waikato (CROW)

The Cyber Security Researchers of Waikato (CROW) aims to return control of data to data owners, by focusing on research addressing data security from a user-centric perspective. With the emergence of cloud computing technologies and prevalent mobile device usage, we are witnessing the diminishing effectiveness of traditional cyber security approaches such as perimeter defence, intrusion detection and infrastructure hardening.
Transport Research Group

Transport affects many aspects of everyday life. In the multi-disciplinary Transport Research Group at the University of Waikato, we are interested in:
- how transport fosters a strong and sustainable economy;
- how transport can be maintained in a way that supports healthy environments
- how drivers might respond to changes in vehicle technology; and
- how research findings might inform decision-making in government and industry.
WAND Network Research Group

Computer networks, including the internet, are having an ever-increasing impact on everyday life. Computer networks come in many shapes and sizes. The internet is the largest man made structure, while bluetooth networks may cover just a desktop. The WAND group is the department's computer networks research group.
Security Technologies Returning Accountability, Trust and User-centric Services in the Cloud (STRATUS)

STRATUS is a six-year, $12.2 million cyber security project, led by the University of Waikato’s Dr Ryan Ko and funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment (MBIE). STRATUS aims to create a suite of novel security tools, techniques and capabilities, empowering users to control the security of their data in the cloud. STRATUS is executed by a team of leading Cloud security researchers and practitioners from University of Waikato, University of Auckland, Unitec Institute of Technology and Cloud Security Alliance.
