What would you do as a Youth worker?
Youth workers
- usually work regular business hours but may work irregular or long hours, shifts or be on call
- usually work in youth centres, community facilities and offices, and may travel locally and nationally
- may do emotionally demanding work
- need to be responsible, communicate well and solve problems
Tasks
- build relationships with youth, families and whānau
- provide support, information and resources to youth
- help youth access social services
- plan and run youth programmes
- connect with communities, schools and employers
- write reports about youth
- apply for funding
- manage budgets and resources
How can you become a Youth worker?
You usually need a qualification to become a youth worker and experience may be useful.
You need
- to pass a police check
You may need
- a New Zealand Certificate in Youth Work (Level 4)
- a New Zealand Diploma in Youth Work
- a Bachelor in Youth Development
- experience in similar work
- a driver licence
- to join a professional organisation
If you're in school
You usually need NCEA Level 2 to do the study or training for this job.
