Clinical psychologists

  • usually work regular business hours but may work overtime
  • usually work in health centres, clinics, private practices and hospitals and may travel locally
  • may do emotionally demanding work
  • need to be responsible, communicate well and identify and solve probelms

  • assess problems and strengths through interviews
  • carry out mental performance tests
  • develop treatment plans for clients
  • provide behavioural therapy
  • help clients understand themselves
  • observe behaviour and emotional responses
  • support self-development and problem solving
  • advise on managing stress and emotions
  • monitor progress and adjust treatments
  • keep records of assessments and therapies

How can you become a Clinical psychologist?

You need more than one qualification to become a clinical psychologist.

You need

  • a bachelor's degree in psychology
  • a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Psychology
  • a Master of Clinical Psychology OR a Doctor of Clinical Psychology
  • 1,500 hours of approved supervised practice
  • an Annual Practising Certificate
  • to pass a police check

If you're in school

You need University Entrance to do the study or training for this job.

Start with a Psychology major in our Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Social Sciences. Like all our undergraduate degrees, both include work-integrated learning.

From there, you'll complete honours-level study through a Bachelor of Arts with Honours, Bachelor of Science with Honours or Postgraduate Diploma in Psychology. You can then apply for our Postgraduate Diploma in Psychology (Clinical), which you complete alongside a Master of Science (Research) or PhD.

Entry is competitive, and once you finish, you can register with the New Zealand Psychologists Board.
